Controversial Irish Soccer Match in 1955 Soccer: F.A.I., 1955, An official Match Programme ''Ireland Versus Yugoslavia, Wednesday 19th October, 1955, at Dalymount Park, Dublin,'' 8vo D. (F.A.I.) 1955, illus., ptd. wrappers. Good Copy. (1) * The Match was marred in controversy ever before a ball was even kicked. The then Archbishop (John Charles Mc Quaid) issued a letter to all parishes, to be read out declaring that all Catholics be banned from attending the match, due primarily to the persecutions of a Catholic Bishop Stepinac, by the communist Regime in Yugoslavia. The church and state pulled rank and barred the army band from playing and Radio Eireann did not broadcast the match either. A Rare Survivor of an Event which encompassed Sport, Church and Politics. Good Copy.
