Title Deeds to Stackallan Mill, Co. Meath, 1838-1966
Co. Meath: A set of 53 Documents (leases, assignments, wills etc.) relating to Stackallan Mill at Ardmulchan on the Meath Blackwater, tracing the tenancy and ownership of the mill from 1801, when the Boyne River Co. leased to Thomas Cuthbert Cookson the site of the mill “formerly held by John Martin”. In 1838 William Peck of Glasthule, Co. Dublin, leased the mill to John Dillon; thence it passed to Peck’s heir James Duggan (1842), to his nephew Patrick Dillon Duggan (1856), to James Ford (1858) and Francis Vance (1864). In 1870 it was purchased by Frederick and John Clayton (F. & J. Clayton Ltd.). In 1940 Clayton’s sold it to Patrick J. O’Reilly of Clonmel, who died in 1965.
In 1882 Clayton’s claimed to be the largest general wool manufacturer in the country; in that year they presented Queen Victoria with a dress, costume, and travelling plaid made entirely from Irish wool (see website of Navan & District Historical Society).
