From Joyce, ‘Saluti Cordiale’
Joyce (James). Autograph signed Note on reverse of his calling card, in Italian, addressed to ‘Caro Silvestri’ (his friend and associate Tullio Silvestri), mentioning a forthcoming article on his ‘Ulysses’ and asking Silvestri to reserve two copies for him, signed ‘Saluti Cordiali / James Joyce / rue de l’Universite 9’. Undated, probably autumn of 1921.
Silvestri was a painter, who met Joyce in Trieste in 1913. He painted portraits of both Joyce and his wife Nora. ‘Silvestri was lively, boisterous, and invariably poor’ (Ellmann). Joyce’s signature is now rare, particularly when not in a book. (1)
