The Queen's Visit to Howth Castle
An important pair of 18th Century gilt Side Chairs, attributed to John Trotter (1730 - 1799), each with a carved cartouche shaped back with flower head crest, issuing leaf sprays and "C" scrolls, around a padded centre, and a conforming serpentine covered seat, raised on front shell capped moulded cabriole legs, with scroll feet and conforming legs to the rear with castors. (2)
History: These chairs were used by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert on the occasion of their Howth Castle Visit, 2nd September 1853, and also used by the Duke & Duchess of York (later King George & Queen Mary) during their visit to the Castle on 22nd August 1897.
* The pair are similar to the Chairs commissioned for Emily Countess of Kildare for Leinster House.
