Archive of the D’Arcy Family of Clare and Galway

Co. Galwey: A collection of Papers and Records of the D’Arcys of Cloondooan, Rockvale, Co. Clare, and New Forest, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway, 17th -20th Centuries. This branch of the illustrious family descends from Martin D’Arcy, High Sheriff of Galway (d 1636), younger son of James D’Arcy of Kiltullagh, Co. Galway, Lord President of Connaught.

Highlights include:
* Memorandum dated 22 July 1695, whereby Richard D’Arcy of Clunenane undertakes to observe the arrangements made by his later father Martin D’Arcy and mother Catherine (daughter of Richard Blake of Ardfry) for payments regarding their daughters Elizabeth (wife of Michael Lynch of Oranmore) and Anstace (unmarried).
With addendum dated 4 June 1701 for payment of the marriage portion of Anstace, now wife of Thomas Lynch of Ballycahallanbeg. Original document, on paper, v fragile.
* Marriage settlement of Richard D’Arcy of Rockvale and Mary, daughter of John Blake of Dublin, 1783. Very large document on vellum (15 membranes).
* Letter dated 2 July 1798 from Thomas H. ffrench, furiously denouncing an occurrence at the house of Mr Newenham at which “Mr Gaven, a respectable & loyal Yeoman, was shut in a Prisoner in one of the Gaunt Rooms of his House” on the rumour that he was a United Irishman.
* Will of Richard D’Arcy of New Forest, 12 May 1832. Probate granted to his son James D’Arcy, 15 December. Large document on vellum (4 membranes).
* Articles of agreement between William Kelly Wilton and others and James D’Arcy of New Forest, 20 Feb. 1847. Large document on vellum (7 membranes).
* Commission to Hyacinth D’Arcy of New Forest to be a Deputy Lieutenant for Co. Galway, signed by Lord Clonbrock, 1882.
* Marriage settlement of Robert Blake, Lieut., 70th Regt, and Frances Younger, both of Camberwell, 1886.
* Letters re genealogical research: 4 letters from W.E. D’Arcy in London to Hyacinth D’Arcy of New Forest, 1888, with copy replies. Also 3 letters to Hyacinth D’Arcy from John O’Hart (author of Irish Pedigrees &c.), 1891.
* Letter addressed to H. [Hyacinth] D’Arcy, New Forest, signed by seven tenants on behalf of their colleagues, resulting from a meeting held on 21 Oct. 1907, stating that they wish to purchase their holdings, and “on account of the great failure of the crops this year we are unable to pay high rents … [and] are resolved to pay no more rent until a sale is effected”. In a second letter, they regret D’Arcy’s refusal to allow the sale and repeat their decision to pay no rent.
* Miscellaneous legal and estate documents, rentals, leases, bills, etc., 18th -19th centuries.

* Folder containing correspondence with the Forestry Department and others re trees, timber, etc., 1940-1944.
* Folder containing printed leaflets re emergency legislation, internment of republican dissidents, etc.,, 1939-1941.
* Photocopies, including inter alia: a Will of Richard D’Arcy of Clunuane [sic] mentioning his brother Symon and son Dominick, 16 Dec. 1727.
* Letter from Peter D’Arcy to Richard D’Arcy of Rockvale, with enclosure from mother, re family matters, 10 July 1801
* Documents relating to the establishment of the Eanmenter Corps of Yeoman Cavalry, Richard D’Arcy to be their Captain, 1796; and certificate of transmission of £39.7.0 pay for them, 1810;
* Letter of John Bernard Burke, genealogist, to Richard D’Arcy re payment of 3 guineas for engraving of his arms in Visitation of Seats and Arms, 1856.
