A rare High Sheriffs red Court Jacket, with decorated collar and cuffs embroidered in silver gilt thread with shamrocks, by Small Page & Son, and with silver plated crown buttons by Josh Starky, London, decorated with a crown, together with Bicorn Hat, with feather plume and silver and gilt decoration; also with the original finely engraved Court Sword and scabbard by Page & Son, London, with embossed and engraved gilt decoration, and original long tin container with brass plaque inscribed “The Mac Dermot” (1)
Provenance: Coolavin, Co. Roscommon.
** The High Sheriff of Roscommon was the British Crown’s judicial representative in County Roscommon, Ireland from 1575 until 1922, when the office was abolished in the new Free State and replaced by the office of Roscommon County Sheriff. The sheriff had judicial, electoral, ceremonial and administrative functions and executed High Court Writs.
