The American Invasion 1888
“First Ever G.A.A. Hurling Match in America”
Medal: G.A.A., The Invaders, 1888, Hurling, an attractive and unusual silver Medal by E. Johnson, Dublin, the obverse in Celtic Cross shape, with crossed hurls through centre inscribed G.A.A. 1888, an extremely rare and unusual early G.A.A. (hurling) Medal. (1)
* Cusack, Croke & Davin fostered the idea of sending Irish top athletes and hurlers to America with the view of strengthening the interest of the exiles in their native pastimes. The venture cost over £1,000, however the sum was not acquired, but the G.A.A. took the plunge and 48 invaders left for the “states” in September 1888. The voyage took 9 days eventually anchoring in New York Harbour. The Programme commenced with a hurling match (the above medal). The Press declared There is Nothing in the World to compare with Irish Hurling, thus was the first time hurling was played on American soil.

* The final took place in Cork, with Bray Emmett’s beating London on a score line of 2.8 to 0.4, a game in what the “Dubs” claimed a three-in-a-row. (Bill Sherry was involved in all).

Medal: G.A.A., Hurling 1904, an attractive and rare All-Ireland Hurling Championship Medal, the inscribed “All-Ireland Hurling Championship, 1904, won by Tullaroan, Kilkenny,” 9ct gold by H. & H. (Hopkins & Hopkins), the obverse in the Celtic Cross Manor inscribed “Cumann na gCleas-Luit gaedhealach,” with “Eire,” across the centre and with central harp overlay, in good condition. Scarce.
* During the early stages of the G.A.A., Counties were represented by Clubs, Tullaroan represented Kilkenny, The Final took place a Carrick-on-Suir (24.6.1906) between St. Finbarrs (Cork) & Tullaroan (Kilkenny), the Cats beat the rebels 1-9 to 1-8.
