The Fire Service Cross 1st Class was worn on the left side of the uniform and was slightly concurved to fit over the breast. Designed by Herbert Knotel of Berlin, it has the maker’s name on the reverse – W. Kilwitz, Bergedorf – and ‘M9/72;. Third Reich: a Helmet and Patrol Jacket of Prague Fire Brigade during the ‘Heydrich Terror’ 1942, Reinhard Heydrich, head of the German Security Service (SD, or Sicherheitsdienst) was made ‘Reichs Protector’ of Bohemia- Moravia when, under the Nazis, Czechoslovakia ceased to exits. Thus began the era in Czech history known as the ‘Heydrich Terror’ due to his brutal methods of dealing with the least resistance. In June 1942, following on his assassination by Allied-trained members of the Free Czech Forces, the ‘parachutists’ (as the Czechs called them) hid out in an Orthodox Church in Prague. They were betrayed by one of their own, and the Church was surrounded by hundreds of SS and Gestapo troops. Prague Fire Brigade members were ordered, under pain of death, to flood the crypt where the parachutists were holding out. When their position eventually became hopeless, they used their last bullets on themselves in order not to be captured.
This lot comprises a fireman’s patrol jacket and helmet of that period. The navy-blue jacket bears 7 large brass buttons and 10 small brass buttons all with the ‘crossed axes’ logo of the Prague Fire Brigade. The ‘stand-and-fall’ collar has two red gorget’s. The shoulder straps are piped in red. The steel helmet has the brass badge of the Prague Fire Brigade, ‘silver’ comb, chin strap and headliner. Both are in good condition.
This is unique opportunity for the serious collector to acquire iconic items from one of the defining moments in the history of the Second World War. (1)More details › -

Its leather headliner and chin strap are both intact. Like all fire helmets of the period, it has a marked ‘step’ in the brim to differentiate it from the helmets of the armed service. Unlike the fire helmets of the early Third Reich period, this model has no aluminium comb on top; as the war progressed, every scrap of aluminium was required for the manufacture of aircraft and such embellishments were considered non-essential. It was made by Richard Morawe of Dusseldorf and issued to Feuerman Mundt. (1)
