Important collection of press photographs recording the Early Years of the Northern Ireland TroublesA file of approx. 100 black and white photographs taken by members of the press relating to the “Troubles” in Northern Ireland, late 1960s and early 1970s. Most are uncaptioned and unprovenanced but ten do have captions and five are by Kjell Hedlund of the Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet. The photographs mostly measure an average of either 17 x 22 cm or 13 x 20 cm and are of excellent quality. They feature civil rights marches and Orange parades; confrontations and battles between soldiers, police and protestors; rallies and speeches. Celebrities of the period are easily recognisable: Ian Paisley, Bernadette Devlin, Terence O’Neill, Brian Faulkner, Cardinal Conway, Lord Carrington, James Chichester Clarke, Paddy Devlin and Jerry Fitt. The photographers were in the midst of the action and recorded some graphic scenes: casualties on all sides, the funeral of IRA man Tony Henderson, police and forensic experts examining the scene of the explosion at the house of Austin Currie, smiling British soldiers heading for home. There is a photograph of the meeting between Terence O’Neill and Sean Lemass in 1965, and a portrait photograph of the then Governor of Northern Ireland, Lord Erskine of Rerrick. Also included: Page from Irish Times of 15 August 1969 reporting the Bogside Riots in Derry, and a copy of Torch magazine for 27 Nov 1943.In all, a visually impactful and important record of a disturbing period in modern Irish history. As photos, w.a.f. As a lot. (1)
