Sean Mac Diarmada (executed 1916)
A fine memorial tribute to Mac Diarmada by Phillis Bean Ui Cheallaigh (wife of former President of Ireland, Sean T. O’Ceallaigh), manuscript, 2pp. with a signed covering letter, written in 1976 for a friend. As a m/ss.
* Phyllis Ryan was a member of a well-known Wexford family, a sister of Dr. Jim Ryan who was medical officer in the G.P.O. during the 1916 Rising. Her elder sister Min was a close friend of Sean Mac Diarmada, who often came to the house where the Ryan’s resided; she later married Richard Mulcahy. In her warm tribute Phyllis describes how “Sean with his handsome face, lame leg, and unbelievable time and attention for everyone made me feel that I counted for something. I have to explain that at 21 years then I was only a child!…. I was the youngest of a large family and my opinions were never sought and seldom taken into account. Sean changed all that for me, and I loved him. It was of course a hero worship love. I knew that he and my sister Min were in love with each other. I was in no way jealous of that. Sean often gave me small jobs to do – a letter to deliver or a message.. That made me proud to feel that I was in his confidence no matter how small the errand….”
A charming tribute from a distinguished lady. Pierced for filing, with traces of cellotape, otherwise in v. good condition. (1)
