Half-length Portrait, “Reverend John Fane Vernon, Aubawn, Co. Cavan,” O.O.C. 76cms x 64cms (30″ x 25″) inscribed on contemporary label on reverse, in original gilt frame. (1)
The Rev. John Fane Vernon (1790-1843) of Aubawn, Co. Cavan, was the younger son of John Vernon of Clontarf Castle, Co. Dublin. He married in 1812 Frances, daughter of John Kearney, Bishop of Ossory (see lot 621). Their grandson, John Fane Vernon of Erne Hill, Co. Cavan (1849-1923) was Governor of the Bank of Ireland; as a landowner he played an active part in the conference that led to the passing of the Wyndham Land Act of 1903
