Start of National Irish Theatre

[Yeats (W.B.)]
A manuscript list of ten names, mostly in the hand of W.B. Yeats on a scrap of paper, with a typescript note at the bottom of sheet stating this is the ‘Suggested Committee for the inauguration of National Irish Theatre, October 1901,’ written by W.B. Yeats (except the name M. Harvey Pelissier which was written by J.H.C.) at the house of Mr. George Coffee on 23rd June 1901. The names include Miss Young, F.J. Fay, Miss Barthwick, cousins, Mrs. Wise Power, Baker, Pelissier, Mrs. Kennedy, Miss Joynt & 1 other. ‘J.H.C.’ is presumably James Cousins. As a m/ss., w.a.f.
* W.B. Yeats was involved from about 1898 in a series of attempts to set up a literary theatre in Dublin, which culminated in the formation of the National Theatre Society in 1903. The present list relates to the development of the Irish Literary Theatre. George Coffey was an antiquarian, and friend of Yeats, and lived in Co. Wicklow. (1)
