Royal Grant of The Title of Baron Tracton, 1781Letters patent of George III, dated 4 January 1781, granting to “our Right Trusty and well beloved Counsellor, James Dennis Esquire,” the title Baron Tracton of Tracton Abbey in County Cork. On vellum, with coloured borders; decorated along the top with the royal arms and emblems, the Irish harp, and the rose and thistle for England and Scotland; and on the left with the portrait of King George III, the arms of the Earl of Carlisle, Lord Lieutenant, and the arms of the newly created Baron Tracton.James Dennis (1721-1782) was the son of a timber merchant of Kinsale, Co. Cork. He became a barrister and had a distinguished legal career: he was legal advisor to the first Earl of Shannon, and was appointed Chief Baron of the Irish Exchequer in 1777. He was also MP successively for Rathcormack and Youghal, and was a founding member of the drinking club known as the Monks of the Screw. He was raised to the peerage in 1781, but died childless in the following year, and his title died with him. He left his estates to his two nephews: those in Kerry to the Rev.
