“It is said Sarsfield is Mortally Wounded.”
Unique 17th Century Broadside

Original Broadside:
A Relation of a Great Victory obtained by their Majesties Forces in Ireland, over the Irish Rebels. In a Letter from Liverpool to a Friend in London. Printed at London, and Re-printed at Edinburgh, by the Heir of Andrew Anderson, Printer to their Excellent Majesties, 1691. Single sheet, printed one side only, approx. 29cms x 18.5cms (11 1/2″ x 7 1/4″), worn at edges, but without loss.
The letter is dated Liverpool, March 3rd 1690. It relates that on receiving intelligence the Irish Forces had crossed the Shannon, two English armies led by Ginkel and Douglas engaged the Irish on Friday 27 February at a place called Ballimore, ‘The Irish being about 20,000, and ours about 12,0000; where they had a very hot Engagement for five hours. The Irish behaved themselves brave enough, for after they were broken, they rallied again very vigorously three times; but were forced to retire to Athlone…. it is said, Sarsfield is mortally wounded; But ’tis certain that General Ginkle was brought to Dublin on Sunday-night in a Coach, sorely wounded.’
Sweeney 4457 (where it is claimed as unique). Wing R. 787A. (1)
