Manuscript of Considerable Limerick Interest
Manuscript Ledger: A manuscript legal account book listing charges and payments to and from clients of an unnamed legal firm, Limerick area, covering various dates circa 1810-1851, and giving much interesting detail of the legal affairs in which the firm and its clients were involved.
In a thick folio ledger strongly bound in full contemporary calf, some surface wear but holding firmly, 172 double pages, some 20pp neatly removed at front before p. 1 (probably an earlier index). With a manuscript index to clients in a separate booklet in marbled paper covers laid in at front.
Prominent clients include Limerick Chamber of Commerce (p. 48), a search for a Proclamation issued by the Earl of Essex; Robert Baker (p. 2) with a reference to ‘an action having been commenced against you for usury,’ Barrington’s Hospital 1829 (p. 113), architect’s plans, large sums for labour costs; Croker Barrington of Cork 1830 (p. 188); the Earl of Limerick (p. 111), lands, ejectments, etc; the Earl of Dunraven 1829-30 (p. 157), moneys advanced; Marquess of Headfort (p. 122), 1830 – 31, various drafts and bills; Francis Lloyd (p. 9) including ejectment proceedings; the Right Honble T. Spring Rice 1835 – 6 (p. 152); Revd. Edward Hartigan 1837 – 46 (p. 151); the Bishop of Clonfert, etc. etc. Of considerable interest in view of the distinguished client list and the level of detail, well worth further study. Gubbins (Charles Henry) of Castleconnell, Co. Limerick. A most extensive and interesting scrapbook, titled, Amusing Scraps & My Records, 1881 – C.H. Gubbins, c. 1881 – 1900. Assembled by C.H. Gubbins. It consists of rare original programmes of sporting and other events in the Limerick area, including ‘Broadford Amateur Athletic Sports, 1884’; ‘Limerick Amateur Athletic & Bicycle Club Annual Sports, 1884, 1885, & 1886’; ‘Castletroy Athletic Sports & Foot Races, 1869’; ‘The Christy Minstrels for Limerick Boat Club at Theatre Royal, Limerick, 1885 & 1886’; ‘Private Theatricals at Roxbora, Jan. 1886’; & others; some original photos., portraits, etc, political prints, sporting prints include some of C.H. Gubbins, orig. envelopes, some illustrated and postally used, some attractive coloured & other scraps, but principally newspaper cuttings of immense Limerick Social & Sporting interest. * Charles Gubbins was born in Castleconnell, the fourth son of Wm. Gough Gubbins J.P. He went to Abbey School, Tipperary. He was manager of W.J. Shaw & Sons of Limerick, and then of Cork branch, and moving in 1900 to take overall management of Shaws, Manchester. He was an extraordinary individual, in sports he excelled as an athlete, cyclist, runner, hurdler, high jumper, cricketer, etc. He was also a singer extraordinaire, musician, particularly a cornet player, actor, etc., and the album abounds with reports of concerts and balls at which he participated, at Adare Manor, etc. Masonic Balls, and others in the local area.
