Rare First Limited Edition of 20th Century Literary Classic
Joyce (James) Ulysses, 4to Paris (Shakespeare & Co.) 1922. First Edition. No. 516 of 750 Copies on hand made paper (from edition of 1000 Copies). In a recent attractive full patinated tan Morocco binding, with original printed blue upper wrapper bound in, t.e.g. others untrimmed, pp (VIII), 732, (4), lacking back blue wrapper and 2 blanks, an excellent copy, little short of fine, and extremely rare in this condition.
* With an original autograph signed note from James Joyce to ‘Cher Monsieur Dugard’ in France, dated 10.2.[1]922, just 8 days after publication of Ulysses, from his address at Rue de l’universite, Paris, on pale blue plain paper, asking for a copy of a periodical ‘contenant l’autre nouvelle Eveline, Malheureusement je l’ai perdu’ (‘Unfortunately i have lost it’). As a m/ss., w.a.f.
N.B. Copies of the first edition of Ulysses are particularly desirable, not just because of their priority, but because the hand-made paper used, lasts much better than the lighter papers used in later printings. The first edition becomes scarcer every year as copies are increasingly absorbed into libraries and other institutions. (2)More details › -
