World’s All-Round Athletic Champion
Pat Davin of Carrick-on-Suir
Medal: Athletics – 1882: Irish Athletic Champion, silver Medal in the shape of a Cross, won by Pat Davin in 1882, for the 120 yds. Hurdle, in a time of 16 3/5 sec. Slightly scuffed, showing signs of wear, but good and excessively rare. An amazing recent discovery.
* Pat Davin, was the youngest of four brother’s from Deeprark, Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary, born to John and Bridget Davin. Their oldest son Maurice was a world renowned athlete, and later went on to become the First President of the G.A.A. Their next son, Denis emigrated to Australia, & their second youngest son Tom emigrated to Newfoundland, both of them achieving noted success in various sports, & in boxing.
From a very early age Pat Davin achieved remarkable success in all sports. In 1878 he won his first championship in the ‘120 yds Hurdles,’he won again in 1879, 1880, 1882 (the year of the above Medal) & in 1883. In 1881 he won the English High Jump Championship, The Long Jump & The Hammer (Old Style), on his way to becoming one of the ‘World’s All Round Athletic Champions.” (1)

Early Pair of G.A.A. Athletic Medals
G.A.A.: Athletics – 1885 & 1886: Gaelic Athletic Association Championship Medals, won by J. Hennessy, first for The 3 Mile Walk, 1885,; & the other The 7 Mile Walk, 1886. Two fine attractive circular silver Medals, the obverse finely engraved with Irish motifs of Harp, Round Tower, Celtic Cross, & crossed hurley & hammer, & signed with initials W.T.P., the reverse decorated with shamrock engraved on each leaf with names Parnell, Dr. Croke, & Davitt, & inscribed with details of race and participant. Each in fine condition. Excessively Rare. (2)
* These Medals are of the utmost rarity, having been issued by the G.A.A. for its early Athletic Meetings. These were issued in the 1st & 2nd years after the Organization was founded.

Medal, D.M.P., Co. Laois. A very attractive pierced 9ct gold Medal, the obverse profusely decorated with shield overlay inscribed T.R. (Thomas Richardson), the reverse Champion, Tug-of-War, B. Division D.M.P., 1895, by W.J.D., with suspension ring. Good. V. Scarce. (1)
* Thomas Richardson was born in Borris-in-Ossory, Queen’s County in 1861, he was a member of the D.M.P. (Dublin Metropolitan Police) his assigned number was 8840. He died c 1930’s.

Irish American Athletic Club
Medal, Athletics, Irish American 1908. A very attractive hexagonal shaped 14ct gold Medal, the obverse with central overlay of the Winged Fist, surrounded by Irish American Athletic Club, New York, and green enamel shamrocks the reverse inscribed 58 lb weight, 1908, by Dieges & Co., Lomn St., N.Y., a very attractive early Athletic Medal. Scarce. (1)
* The Club was established in January 1898, originally called the Great New York Irish Athletic Association. They had their Stadium near Cavalry Cemetery, Queens, N.Y., and built a state of the art Stadium in 1901, called Celtic Park, which was sold on in 1930 for housing.

TOBIN HELD THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP FOR MANY YEARS IN THIS CATEGORY, HIS RECORD IN THE 56 LBS IS AS FOLLOWS: 29′ 1 1/2″ (without follow) 15′ 5″ (over bar). G.A.A.: Athletics, 1914. A good collection of gold and silver Athletic Medals awarded by the G.A.A. to William Maloney, during the 1914/15 season. To include:
(a) A Celtic Cross gold Medal, the obverse depicting various forms of sports and inscribed in centre 3 Miles Flat Championship, Connaught 1914, the reverse blank;
(b) A circular gold Medal, the obverse depicting the Connaught Crest, the Sunburst, Wolfhound and Round-Tower, the reverse inscribed G.A.A. 1 Mile Flat Championship Connaught 1914;
(c) An All-Ireland Athletic silver Medal, the obverse inscribed and in Celtic Cross design, the reverse inscribed 1914, One Mile,;
(d) A circular gold Medal, the obverse depicting the Sunburst, Wolfhound and Round-Tower, the reverse inscribed Novice Cross Country Championship 1915, won by Ballinasloe Harriers, all by Hopkins & Hopkins, Dublin, an attractive collection. Scarce. (1)
* William Maloney went on to represent Ireland in Athletics at no fewer than 17 International Events between 1926-33, where he completed against such greats as Lord Burhley, R.M.S. Tisdall & W. Winters. The above Medals give an indication of Athletic ability from an early age.

Medal: Tailteann Games, 1928: Wonderful heavy circular silver Medal, Aonach Tailteann, Baile atha Cliath, 1928, awarded for First Prize in Gymnastics (possibly to A.J. Whitford of Swansea for individual prize). The obverse is decorated with head and shoulders of a young queen, ‘ An Bainrioghan Tailte,’and the reverse with Celtic decorated border, with the four Provincial arms, surrounding a plain inscribed centre, 5cms. good, in original box. Motor Car Racing, 1932: Sir Malcom Campbell (1885-1949) A silver Cigarette Lighter by Dunhill of London, with an enamel faced clock recessed in the front, together with an inscription “To Lonnie from Malcolm,” 25/12/1932, a very desirable memento as a lighter, w.a.f. Good.
* Sir Malcolm Campbell was the famous Race-Car driver and legend of Brooklands Race-Course. he was also highly regarded for his record breaking land speed endeavours. This gift was presented to his good friend “Lonnie Limb” who was the M.D. of Castrol GTX in the 1930’s. Malcolm’s son who was also recognised in the area of speed breaking records, died in a horrific accident while attempting to break the world water-speed record. (1)
