An Unrecorded Wilde Item
Wilde (Oscar) Mr. Oscar Wilde’s Lecture, Printed brochure, 4pp. (single folded sheet), in brown ink on patinated paper, advertising Wilde’s lecture on ‘personal Impressions of America’ at the Princes’ Hall, Piccadilly, Tuesday 10th July, 1883. Issued by W.F. Morse, Manager (initially for the producer D’oyly Carte) of Wilde’s lecture tours. With a synopsis of Wilde’s lecture, presumable written by Wilde himself. Not in Masons’ bibliography, not mentioned by Ellmann, apparently unrecorded.
* Wilde’s American lecture tour of 1882 presented him as a representative of the ‘aesthetic movement’, parodied in the opera by Gilbert and Sullivan, ‘Patience’ (‘As I walk down Piccadilly / with a poppy or a lily / in my mediaeval hand …’). On his return he generated further revenue from the experience by presenting his American impressions to the English, ‘ a mixed bag of comments on scenery, people, art, theatre, done with great wit’ (Ellman). An excessively rare Wilde item. (1)

Yeats (W.B.) An excellent A.L.s. to Dr. (George) Sigerson, 2pp (folded sheet, rectos only) written from George Pollexfen’s home in Co.Sligo, dated Jan. 13, probably 1910 outlining plans to develop a series of liteary and historical lectures. (Sigerson was at this time President of the National Literary Society). Yeats mentions that (Lionel) Johnson is to lecture in Belfast on Thomas Davis, and asks if Sigerson could arrrange for him to speak also in Dublin and Cork. ‘I should say that the oftener men like Johnson & Hyde get audiences the better. My own idea is that is that we should repeat our own men, yourself. Hyde, [Richard Ashe], King & Johnson as many times as possible, that we may train up a certain body of opinion of a consistent kind. I wish someone would lecture for you on recent Irish novelists, Miss Barlow, Miss Lawless and one or two others. Our lectures should do some of that work which a national Literary Review would do if we had it. …. would King lecture on the novelists.’
* An interesting example of Yeats’ use of helpers such as Sigerson to promote his literature agenda. With a good signature. As a m/ss., w.a.f. (1)
