An usual Chinese porcelain Plaque,

painted in underglaze copper red on cobalt blue with two monkeys on a rock above a deer, a bird and wasps’ nest above, the rounded rim with bamboo, 11 ¾ by 16cm;30 by 40.8cm (1)
This plaque, which appears to Western eyes simply to feature disparate wildlife, to a Chinese would be read like a book. The word for wasp (and bee) is feng and monkey hou; fenghou means ‘May you be promoted to high rank’. The deer (lu) is homophonous with lu, emolument. The whole, therefore, wishes high rank and appropriate remuneration.
