* Another pair was exhibited in the Chelsea China Exhibition, no. 127. the idea of the man – free as a bird – and the woman caging him, was common throughout the eighteenth century. Such groups as these could only be afforded by the most affluent in society and are in feminine taste. So, they went on the mantelpiece and she smiled slightly every time she saw them, but did it imply her husband ruled the marriage? The eighteenth century mindset may be difficult to fathom.
