* Edmund Joseph Sullivan was born in 1869 (d. 1933), a painter, watercolourist, draughtsman, lithographer, engraver, art critic and teacher. His early association was with ‘The Daily Graphic’ and this launched his fame, and established him as one of the foremost illustrators of his time. The above portrait appears on page 41, of Vol. 2 of The Old Court Suburb, published in London in 1902.More details › -

An interesting signed autograph letter dated 29 Nov. 1928, 2pp. (single sheet), on embossed Oireachtas Eireann notepaper, ‘To my Dear Mrs. Thomas,’ offering congratulations on a decision, details unclear but possibly a decision to join the Catholic Church. ‘ It is really wonderful, and I am sure that if those we have who are dead can be near us in this world, that Francis will rejoice in your decision.’ Interesting lot. As a m/ss., w.a.f.
* Patrick Little was a supporter of the Irish Volunteers, opposed the Treaty, and fought in the Four Courts in 1922. He became first editor of an Phoblacht in 1925, joined Fianna Fail later that year and was elected to Dail Eireann in 1927, serving until 1954. He was Minister for Post and Telegraphs 1939 – 48, and first Chairman of the Arts Council 1951-56. (1)

Francis Thomas in London, offering congratulations on his forthcoming marriage, and continuing ‘You will both soon be in this country which will soon be the first country in the world. This is not a very great boast. But it will be grand to be leading them somewhere. The time is getting nearer when men will put up for his soul, his body, his earth, and all it swings(?) in. We were chosen for it in this country, when we were left the last people, in the west, with finger tips to reach the fingers of the unsee..’ with a good signature, and with the original postally used envelope addressed in Yeats’ hand. A very good collection of stories taken down from old people mostly in Kiltartan, Gort, Co. Galway. Hf. title, uncut, orig. decor. blue cloth.
* The use of Margaret Gregory’s attractive illustrations was part of Lady Gregory’s effort to establish a working relationship with her daughter in law. Under the Gregory wills, ownership of Coole passed to Lady Gregory’s son Robert as soon as he married, and Lady Gregory was henceforth a tenant at Robert’s pleasure (and after his death that of his widow). The book is dedicated to ‘R.G.G., A. Kiltartan Child’ (Robert’s son Richard). V. Scarce in this condition. (1)
