‘With Compliments of Mr. James Joyce’ Joyce (James) Chamber Music [poems]. Elkin Mathews, L. 1907, [40]pp (unnumbered), light green cloth gilt stamped, an exceptional copy, clean and fresh, with just a little scattered foxing, S & C 3, probably the first binding variant. Typed card laid in, ‘With compliments of / Mr. James Joyce’; also inscribed in a bold hand on f.f.e.p., ‘Joe, with Kathleen’s / love & best wishes / Christmas 1907’. Evidently this copy was sent to Pugh at Joyce’s request. We have not traced Joe; but it is tempting to wonder if Kathleen was one of the Sheehy girls, who were all friendly with Joyce. Provenance: From the collection of Thomas Pugh. A splendid copy of Joyce’s first commercially published work, evidently a presentation copy although not signed. (1)
